A great paint job starts long before the first brushstroke. Skip priming or rush it, and every layer line, seam, and stray fingerprint gets locked in under the paint where it will stare back at you for the life of the piece. Spend the extra twenty minutes here and everything you do after gets easier, faster, and better looking. Here is how I prime every print, resin or FDM, before it touches a drop of color.
Step 1: Clean and Sand the Print First


Pull any supports and knock down obvious nubs first. If it is a resin print, give it a proper wash to strip off leftover uncured resin and mold release, then let it dry completely before you touch sandpaper to it. FDM prints just need a wipe with soap and water to get rid of oils from handling and dust from your workspace. Once it is clean and dry, sand with a grit progression instead of jumping straight to something fine. Start around 400 grit to knock the top off the worst layer lines, then work up through 600, 800, and 1000. A wet dry sandpaper assortment covers the whole range in one pack, and doing it wet keeps dust down, which matters a lot with resin since that dust is nasty to breathe. A sanding sponge is worth having alongside flat sandpaper because it flexes into curves and rounded details that flat sheets fight against. You are not trying to get a mirror finish at this stage, just an even surface with no sharp ridges for primer to grab onto.

Step 2: Use a Filler Primer, Not a Thin Adhesion Primer


This is the step that actually erases layer lines, and it is the one most people skip. A basic spray primer is thin and mostly just helps paint stick. A filler primer, sometimes labeled high build or sandable, lays down a thicker coat that fills the tiny valleys your sanding could not reach. I keep a can of gray automotive filler primer on the bench for bigger prints and workshop pieces because it is cheap and easy to find, and it sands beautifully once cured. For smaller, detailed miniatures I switch to a hobby grade primer like Tamiya fine surface primer, which lays down a much finer, tighter coat that will not bury sharp details the way a heavier automotive can might. Gray is the safe default for most color schemes. White works better if your top coat is going to be a bright or light color, since gray can dull pastels and yellows.

Step 3: Spray Thin, Even Coats, Not One Heavy Pass
Hold the can eight to ten inches from the surface and use smooth, sweeping passes, keeping the can moving the whole time so you never linger in one spot. Two or three light coats beat one heavy coat every time. A thick pass looks tempting because it covers faster, but it pools in corners, drips on vertical surfaces, and can obscure fine detail entirely. Give each coat fifteen to twenty minutes to flash off before the next one, and work somewhere ventilated, ideally outdoors or in a garage with the door open. Primer goes on best in mild, dry conditions. Spraying in the cold or in high humidity is a common way to end up with a frosty, uneven finish that never fully cures right.
Step 4: Sand Between Coats and Repeat if Needed
Let the final coat cure for at least an hour, then lightly sand with 600 grit to knock down any texture the spray left behind. Wipe away the dust and take a hard look under good light, angling the piece so any leftover layer lines catch the light and show themselves. If they are still visible, prime again and repeat the cycle. Two or three rounds of prime, cure, sand is completely normal for a print with stubborn lines, and it will erase texture that dry sanding alone never would have touched. This is the part that separates a print that looks obviously 3D printed under paint from one that looks like a sculpted piece.
Bonus: Try a Zenithal Primer Coat for Free Shading
Once you have a smooth final coat down, try priming in two tones instead of one flat color. Spray a dark gray or black from underneath and along the lower half of the piece, then mist a lighter gray or white from above at an angle, letting it fade out before it fully covers the dark coat. This is called zenithal priming, and it mimics light falling from overhead before you have painted a single detail. It makes the piece easier to read in three dimensions right away, speeds up your actual painting since you are working with built in shadows and highlights instead of flat gray, and makes fine details pop even under thin paint layers later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Spraying one thick coat instead of several thin ones is the number one cause of ruined detail and drips. Skipping the wash or wipe down step is a close second, since leftover oils and mold release will make primer bead up or peel later. Priming outside in cold or damp weather causes a chalky, uneven texture that no amount of extra coats fixes. Not filling visible seams and gaps with modeling putty before priming means you are just priming over a flaw that will still be there after paint. And do not skip test spraying a scrap piece from the same filament or resin batch before committing to the whole model, since some primer formulas react oddly with certain plastics and you want to know that before it happens on your best print.
Pro Tip
Keep a small pile of scrap sprue or failed print corners from every filament and resin you use. Before priming anything you actually care about, spray a test piece from the matching material and let it sit for a day. It only costs you a few minutes and a scrap of plastic, but it catches compatibility problems, drying issues, and color surprises before they happen on a piece you spent hours printing and cleaning up.
