Spider-Man: Brand New Day Just Broke Box Office History
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into theaters and immediately smashed records, pulling in a reported 72 million dollars in preview sales, the biggest domestic preview haul in Hollywood history, and an opening day north of 167 million dollars per Deadline. Tom Holland returns as a Peter Parker fighting crime in a world that has forgotten him, and critics are loving it too, with the film sitting at a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Destin Daniel Cretton delivers a Spidey story that feels personal even while chasing Endgame level numbers. With a weekend haul projected around 270 million domestic, this is officially the biggest Spider-Man opening yet.
Brand New Day Post Credits Scene Points Straight at Secret Wars
Brand New Day only has one scene after the credits, but it is a doozy. The film revisits the Spidey Tracker app introduced earlier in the movie, which lets New Yorkers log Spider-Man sightings around the city. As the credits wrap, the map zooms out past New York, past Earth, past the moon, and glitches before locking onto a second Spider-Man marker somewhere out in space. Marvel is not saying what it means yet, but fans are already running theories, from a tease of Avengers: Doomsday to a possible doorway for Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse to finally cross into the main MCU timeline.
Avengers: Doomsday Confirms Hayley Atwell Is Back as Peggy Carter
Marvel used its Comic-Con panel to confirm Hayley Atwell is returning as Peggy Carter for Avengers: Doomsday, adding another beloved face to what is already the biggest ensemble cast the MCU has ever assembled. She joins a lineup packed with Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby's Fantastic Four, plus the X-Men lineup of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Channing Tatum's Gambit. Marvel is reportedly heading back for reshoots to add even more large scale action before the December 18 release, so expect more casting surprises before this one hits theaters.
DCU Summer Slate Heats Up With Supergirl and Clayface Footage
James Gunn's DCU kept the momentum going this week with new looks at both Supergirl and Clayface. Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El anchors the DCU's second chapter film, showing off super strength, high speed flight and heat vision in the latest trailer cuts, with Jason Momoa's Lobo along for the ride. Right behind it comes Clayface, directed by Speak No Evil's James Watkins and co-written by Mike Flanagan, which is leaning hard into full on body horror territory for its September 11 release. Two very different tones, one universe, and it is a good sign for how varied Gunn wants this new DCU to feel.
