This week in superhero news, Avengers: Doomsday owned D23 with a trailer and cast reveal that might be the biggest in Marvel history, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day quietly rewrote the box office record books. Over on the DC side, James Gunn's future at the studio got a lot more stable and Clayface's nightmare design leaked early through theater merch. Here is everything fans need to know before the weekend.
Avengers: Doomsday Drops a Massive New Trailer and Confirms Its Full Cast at D23
Avengers: Doomsday just had its biggest moment yet. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell took the stage at D23 to debut new footage of Doctor Doom squaring off against a multiverse's worth of heroes, and Variety reports the lineup now includes X-Men legends like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen alongside the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts casts. Hugh Jackman even crashed the panel with a video message from Ryan Reynolds begging for a spot. This is shaping up to be the biggest crossover Marvel has ever attempted, and it still has months to go before its December 18 release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Becomes the Highest-Grossing Movie in North American History
Tom Holland's Spider-Man just broke a record that stood for a decade. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office, with a worldwide total near $2.5 billion per SuperHeroHype. Sony has set an October 6 digital release while keeping the film in theaters through November 16, and director Destin Daniel Cretton has already signed a new deal with the studio off the film's success. Fans are already speculating about what a follow-up could look like.
James Gunn and Peter Safran Confirmed to Stay at DC Studios After the Paramount Merger
The DCU's future just got a lot clearer. Deadline reports that James Gunn and Peter Safran will keep running DC Studios following the Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery merger, with a meeting between the pair and new Skydance co-CEO David Ellison reportedly going well. Gunn is currently shooting the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow for a July 2027 release, so the DCU slate keeps moving forward without a shakeup at the top. It is a relief for anyone who has been nervous about what the merger could mean for the franchise.
Clayface's Final Monster Transformation Leaks Through DCU Movie Merch
Clayface fans got an early look at the movie's biggest reveal, and it did not come from a trailer. SuperHeroHype reports that theater merchandise, including a gripper cup, shows off the character's fully sculpted, grotesque final form ahead of the film's October 23 release. Actor Tom Rhys Harries has already teased the design as something fans are going to love, and reports suggest the towering monster version only shows up once, right at the climax. That kind of restraint could make the moment hit even harder when it finally lands.
VisionQuest Trailer Reveals T'Nia Miller's Jocasta as Ultron's New MCU Creation
Vision's new Disney Plus show just added another classic Marvel villain to the mix. The latest VisionQuest trailer gives T'Nia Miller's Jocasta her full on screen debut, confronting Paul Bettany's Vision while James Spader returns as the voice of Ultron. In the comics Jocasta was built using Janet van Dyne's brain patterns, and the show appears to be leaning into that unsettling connection. VisionQuest premieres on Disney Plus on October 14, so fans will not have to wait long to see where her loyalties land.
